Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between regular and suspension style clamps?
A: Regular pipe straps secure the pipe perpendicularly, or across the run of the pipe. Suspension pipe straps secure the pipe along its' run. Regular clamps are most commonly used to support pipe inside the joist bays (whether to the subfloor or to the joist itself) or along the wall. Suspension clamps are often used when it is necessary to run a length of pipe inside multiple joists or studs - they both support the pipe and prevent it's contact with the stud, eliminating friction and noise. Suspension clamps are often used to support pipe when it is installed underside and across multiple joists (for example, in basement)
Q: What size screw can be used with these clamps?
A: #4, #6 or #8 screws, preferably with a mushroom (domed/button) style cap. If possible, avoid screws with cupped/bugle head as these could split the clamp ear when driven too far in.
Q: How far apart should pipe clamps be installed?
A: The support spacing varies by pipe type, size and orientation in which they are installed. ICC recommends the following spacing for vertical runs:
PEX tubing (sizes up to 1-1/4") and CPVC (up to 1") : horizontal - every 32" (or every other stud/joist for typical 16" OC spacing); vertical - every 10ft or more often.
Copper pipe (sizes up to 1-1/4"): horizontal - every 6ft (or every 4th stud/joist); vertical - up to 10ft or more often. However, considering that copper pipe is heavier than PEX, we suggest a minimum of 32" - 48" (every 2nd or 3rd stud/joist) for horizontal runs.
Copper pipe (sizes 1-1/2" and 2"): horizontal - every 10ft (or every 7th stud/joist); vertical - up to 10ft or more often. Again, we suggest a minimum of 32" (every 2nd stud/joist) for horizontal runs when using plastic pipe clamps due to the heavy weight of the pipe.
Q: Can plastic pipe clamps be used with PEX-AL-PEX?
A: Only the 1/2" clamps with 1/2" PEX-AL-PEX (PAP). Other PAP sizes have different OD's and will not fit the clamps.
