More About 1/2" PEX Tubing w/ Oxygen Barrier

1/2" oxygen barrier PEX is the most common size for all residential and light commercial radiant floor heating applications. It can be used for heating reinforced (wire mesh or rebar) concrete slabs in basements, garages and warehouses or for thin slabs (gypsum concrete) used in indoor applications. It also is the most popular size oxygen barrier PEX used for underfloor/staple-up installations, where PEX is secured to the subfloor between the joists, with or without aluminum heat transfer plates.

Typical loop (circuit) length of 1/2" barrier PEX varies within 300-350ft range depending on project specifics and system requirements. For snow melting applications, maximum recommended circuit length should not exceed 200ft.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is the typical testing pressure for an in-slab installation?
A: For all types of hydronic and radiant floor heating projects, typical testing pressure is 100 psi for of at minimum of 30 minutes.

Q: Can 1/2" PEX be used for ice and snow melting projects?
A: Ice and snow melting systems generally require high flow rates to provide adequate efficiency. For small projects or short loops, 1/2" PEX can be used. For larger walkways, driveways and parking lots, larger tubing sizes, such as 5/8" and 3/4", are recommended.

Q: Which connection methods can I use with this PEX?
A: Compatible methods include Crimp, Clamp, Press, Compression and Push-Fit (Push-To-Connect).
